Introduction
Spring is one of the best times to get out and enjoy everything the Chicago South Suburbs has to offer. From fresh air and walking trails to local food, shopping, and spring events, there is so much to explore close to home. The season is a great excuse to slow down, enjoy the sunshine, and rediscover some of the gems right here in our own communities.
Sandridge Nature Ceter
If you love the outdoors, a visit to Sand Ridge Nature Center in South Holland is a great place to start. It offers four walking trails through prairies, woodlands, wetlands, and boardwalk areas, making it a peaceful spring stop for nature lovers.
Monee Reservoir
Monee Reservoir is another fun option, with shoreline fishing, kayak and canoe access, and beautiful water views that make it perfect for a spring day out.
Local Favorites for Food and Fun
Spring is also a great time to enjoy local favorites for food and fun. Downtown Homewood is known for its quaint shopping and dining scene, while Flossmoor Station in historic downtown Flossmoor offers handcrafted beer and a relaxed local vibe in a restored train station. For something unique, Thornton Distilling Co. gives you a mix of history, craft cocktails, food, and a one-of-a-kind setting inside Illinois’ oldest standing brewery, dating back to 1857.
And as the season moves along, spring markets and events start popping up across the area. Homewood’s Farmers Market opens May 30, 2026, and runs on Saturdays through October 10. There are also fun seasonal events like the Spring Equinox Sunrise Hike at Monee Reservoir on March 20 and the Spring Wine Walk in Lansing on May 9.
Spring in the Chicago South Suburbs is all about getting outside, supporting local, and making memories close to home. Whether you are taking a walk, enjoying a great meal, shopping downtown, or checking out a local event, there are plenty of ways to make the most of the season.
